2019 Golden Boy: Samuel Chukwueze, Dele-Bashiru miss out of top 20 nominees
Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze has been dropped from the list of top 20 nominees for the 2019 Golden Boy Award. The prestigious prize is organised by Italian news outlet Tuttosport to recognise outstanding performances under the age of 21.
Chukwueze, 20, has been superb for his Spanish League giants this campaign scoring twice and assisting one other in seven La Liga appearances. He was also instrumental for Nigeria as they won bronze medal at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations championship in Egypt. Watford midfielder Tom Dele-Bashiru is the second Nigerian star who failed to progress to the next round of voting process. The 20-year-old joined the Hornets from Manchester City in a six year deal on a free transfer this summer. He was part of the Nigeria's U20 squad that crashed out of the FIFA U20 tournament at the second round earlier this year. Dutch forward Rafael van der Vaart won the maiden edition of the award in 2003, while the last edition in 2018 was clinched by his countryman Matthijs de Ligt. Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba, Raheem Sterling, Anthony Martial and Kylian Mbappe are other stars who have won the important prize.
