Nigeria vs Algeria: Riot breaks out in France
French police struggled to curtail Algeria football fans on Sunday after their win over Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Egypt. After Algeria scored the winning goal at the final minute, thousands of fans stormed the streets. Riotous incidents were however recorded in Paris, Lyon and Marseille, France24 reports. Marseille, where thousands of Algeria fans watched the match on the Boulevard de la Canebière, was worst hit. According to the police, 282 people were arrested between Sunday night and Monday morning. 50 people were arrested in Paris and 147 in the Lyon area where dozens of cars were set on fire. Interior Minister, Christophe Castaner reacted to the development on Monday. He hailed the police and firemen for their “speedy reaction and professionalism which contained the violence and to the perpetrators” being apprehended.
