Army investigates soldiers who robbed VIP
The Nigerian Army on Sunday, July 14, said that investigation has commenced into the case involving some soldiers who stole away a consignment while on escort duty from Sokoto to Kaduna. It should be noted that the consignment contained money amounting to millions of naira which they were asked to deliver by a Very Important Personalty (VIP). The Army gave the names of the absconded soldiers as Cpl Gabriel Oluwaniyi, Cpl Mohammed Aminu, LCpl Commander Haruna, LCpl OLuji Joshua, and LCpl Hayatudeen.
The soldiers were said to be members of Operation Harbrin Kunama III in Sokoto. Lieutenant Audu Arigu, the spokesman for the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, who confirmed the incident said the soldiers were detailed for a legitimate escort duty, but chose to rob the VIP. He, however, did not reveal the identities of the concerned VIP and the total amount of money that was taken from him. A source close to The Daily Times mentioned that the said VIP could be Major General Hakeem Otiki, the GOC of the 8 Divisional Nigerian Army, Sokoto. The money is definitely huge, most probably hundreds of millions,” the source said. Arigun also said that contrary to reports, the said VIP was not in the convoy when the escorts fled with the money. “The GOC or the said VIP couldn’t have been in the convoy, it didn’t add up…He only sent them based on trust, he said.
