Nigeria vs South Africa: Gernot Rohr identifies Super Eagles deficiencies, warns players
Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has demanded more tactical discipline from his players. Nigeria and South Africa will clash in the quarter-final of the African Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Egypt later today.
All the four goals conceded by the Super Eagles at the tournament were as a result of defensive errors. Players such as: Leon Balogun, John Ogu, Wilfred Ndidi, Kenneth Omeruo and Ola Aina have variously been found wanting. Goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has been unconvincing too. We saw it already against Madagascar, two individual mistakes caused the goals, gifts, so now it is not a good moment to make gifts,” Rohr said in an interview with the Super Eagles media team. We have to be more disciplined, more committed in the defensive job. What we did against Cameroon half-time, we changed the organization in the midfield that Alex is helping a little bit more our two defensive midfielders. And it was better in the second half because our fullbacks could stay closer to the wingers which was not the case in the first half. Sometimes there is lack of communication between our players, between goalkeepers and central defenders, between central defenders and fullbacks, between fullbacks and wingers so we must do better in this department, in the communication especially in the defensive organization of our players.
