The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Wednesday extended by one year the tenure of the party's caretaker committee led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi.
A meeting of top party members including Governors and Senators was held at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, where the decision was taken.
The party's National Executive Committee, NEC, extended Makarfi's tenure by one year; during which the caretaker committee is expected to organise a national convention.
Makarfi accepted the extension with a promise that the party would come out of the crisis stronger.
The PDP had earlier today been prevented from holding its national convention, by security operatives.
The Makarfi-faction had previously fixed today, August 17th to hold the convention.
However, two separate court rulings on the issue- one for, and the other against- had created much confusion which culminated in policemen barring delegates from entering the convention venue today.
The party proposes that it would use the extended period to continue to negotiate with Ali Modu Sheriff, the ousted Chairman of the party who is currently in court to re-take his position.
