The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, January 28, said an investigation will be launched on the deputy Senate president, Ovie Omo-Agege, should a petition be received on an allegation of his being a convicted felony in California, the United States of America.

Speaking to journalists on various calls for the resignation of Omo-Agege by some civil society organisation, the Senate spokesperson, Godiya Akwashiki, said the Red Chamber is yet to receive any petition against the deputy president of the Senate. Akwashiki said Omo-Agege had also denied the allegation that he was convicted for felony while practising as a lawyer in the United States in 1998. He said even though the issue is said to have happened in the US, the Senate would probe Omo-Agege if a petition is submitted on it. “If somebody submits a petition against the DSP to the Senate, I want to assure you that we will look into it. For now, it is not an issue of the Senate,” Senator Akwashiki said. Meanwhile, It was previously reported that a coalition of civil society organisations had accused Omo-Agege of perjury and felony while practising law in the United Staes of America. The Coalition of Civil Society and Youth Groups in Nigeria (CCSYGN), vowed to occupy the National Assembly unless Omo-Agege is prevailed upon by the Nigerian Senate to resign from office and his senatorial seat declared vacant.However, one of the coalition members, Centre for Policy Advocacy and Leadership Development, has distanced itself from the allegation and apologised for being part of the coalition. The group's leader, Edwin Olorunfemi, said he has extricated himself from the coalition's stance, adding that the allegation is false.
