Senate moves to probe the activities of NDDC
The Nigerian Senate has vowed to launch an investigation into the spending activities of the Niger Delta Development Agency (NDDC). The move by the Senate comes hours shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari ordered a forensic audit into the operations of the NDDC from 2001 to 2019.
According to rpoorts, The Senate's committee on public accounts on Thursday, October 17, decried the 'over-spending' by the NDDC. The chairman of the committee, Matthew Urhoghide, while speaking during a planned budget defence for the agency said the Senate is interested in only some areas of expenditure of the NDDC. Urhoghide said the director of special duties to, Enyia Akwagaga, the NDDC's managing director, Nosakhare Agbongiasede, informed him of his principal's inability to attend the meeting said the Senate would, ordinarily, not allow the director to testify before it or its committees. He also directed that all necessary documents be made available to the committee on or before Monday, October 21. “What we know is that N2.5 billion was budgeted for this activity (that is the silting and clearing of water hyacinth), my hearing is that the commission has spent over N65 billion." "It is an accusation until they come to clear the air for us. This is why the Senate is interested and has mandated this committee to carry out this investigation,” the committee chairman said.
