Omar al-Bashir gets parliament's backing for third term as Sudan's president

With the tenure of Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir gets closer to it's end, some members of the country's parliament are seeking to amend the constitution to allow al-Bashir to contest in the upcoming 2020 elections.

Omar al-Bashir, currently wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes and genocide, came into power 1989 following a coup and has ruled since then but the introduction of a two-term limit in 2005 had made it impossible for al-Bashir to contest in 2020.

Parliament speaker Ibrahim Ahmed Omar said he had received a letter signed by a majority of lawmakers, --33 parties representing 294 deputies-- who all back an amendment that extends the term limit.

"I will abide by the constitutional and legal steps and the regulations necessary to discuss these amendments in parliament for it to take any decision on them," Reuters news agency quotes him as saying

The proposed constitutional changes would also give the president the power to sack elected governors.
