Mexican Judge halts extradition of drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to U.S.

The extradition of Mexican cartel boss Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to the U.S. has been temporarily halted by a Judge in Mexico, after his lawyers filed appeals.
After the USA guaranteed that El-Chapo would not face the death penalty, Mexico had given its consent in May, for the drug-lord to be transferred there.
El-Chapo faces murder and drug smuggling charges in the U.S.; and the ruling means it could now take months or even years before he is extradited.
Guzman, who had previously escaped from prison via a tunnel in his jail cell, was re-captured in January and sent back to jail, after six months on the run. He had already escaped a maximum security facility once before, spending 13 years at large.
Speaking on one of his appeals' argument, Guzman's lawyer, Jose Rodriguez, told the Associated Press the statute of limitations has run out on some crimes Guzman is accused of in the U.S. His legal team also argues some of the accusations lack direct evidence.
El-Chapo is presently being held in a maximum security prison near the U.S. border.
