Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named interim manager by Manchester United

Manchester United have named its former Norwegian star, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as interim manager till the end of the season.

The Solskjaer takes over from Jose Mourinho who was relieved of his duties on Tuesday following a poor season display by his team, with his last game been the  3-1 loss to rivals Liverpool.

United said Solskjaer will run the first-team while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager.

Mike Phelan, former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson, joins as first-team coach alongside Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

"Manchester United is in my heart and it's brilliant to be coming back in this role," said Solskjaer.

"I'm really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club."

Solskjaer made 235 Premier League appearances for United, hitting 91 goals including the injury-time winner in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich and coached Man Utd's reserve side from 2008 for two years.

He was the manager of Norwegian side Molde, before his appointment and had recently signed a new three-year deal until the end of the 2021 season.

Solskjaer also had a short unsuccessful stint with Cardiff City in 2014.

The Manchester club had accidentally revealed his appointment in a video clip posted on its website but was immediately removed.

Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg also made the gaffe when she tweeted her congratulations.
