An arrest warrant has been issued for former Zimbabwe's first lady Grace Mugabe by South African Police over allegations of assault said to have happened in Johannesburg, in 2017.
Grace Mugabe, due to being the wife of then Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe was granted immunity from prosecution by the South African government but the immunity was overturned by a court earlier this year following a challenge by the alleged victim of the assault, Gabriella Engels.
A police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo said on Wednesday, "I can confirm that a warrant for the arrest of Grace Mugabe was issued last Thursday," adding that the force is seeking the assistance of Interpol's to enforce the warrant.
Mrs. Mugabe was accused of assaulting the victim --a model-- with an electric cable in a luxury hotel, in Sandton district of Johannesburg but she denied the accusations instead saying an "intoxicated and unhinged" Engels attacked her with a knife after the model had gone to see the Mugabes' sons at the hotel.
Once seen within Zimbabwe as the successor to her 94-year-old husband Robert Mugabe, Mrs Mugabe has stayed away from public since the ousting of her husband by the military in the November 2017 coup.
