Second round of weekend football for the English new premier league season has been concluded with majority of the big teams getting 3 points as they look to keep last season's winner Manchester City from retaining the trophy this season.
Now that we have that all cleared out, let's get into the nitty-gritty of match day 2.
Action began at Cardiff City Stadium, Where Cardiff City played host to a Rafa Benitez and Newcastle. The game, which ended goalless, was pretty much a drab affair which the exceptions of two notable moments; Newcastle's Isaac Hayden red carded in the 66 minute and a last minute penalty (ultimately squandered by on-loan Chelsea player Kenedy) awarded to the away side.
The draw though produced a marginal positive for both teams as they earned their first point of the season.
Other games were much more exciting and filled with goals. At Goodison Park, Everton raced into a two goal lead over Southampton at the half hour mark with goals from England international Theo Walcott and summer signing Richarlison, who continued his goal scoring form from where he stopped last weekend.
Former Liverpool forward Danny Ings pulled one on his full debut back for the Saints and could have equalised in added time but his effort was blocked. This marked Everton's first victory of the new season which manager Marco Silva was visibly delighted.
Leicester City secured a two nil victory over newcomers Wolverhampton Wanders but has star striker Jamie Vardy sent off in the 66th minute of the game.
Tottenham Hotspur saw off Fulham 3-1 in at Wembley with striker Harry Kane finally breaking his August hoodoo to add the North Londoner's third goal. Aleksandar Mitrovic earlier cancelled Lucas Moura's opener in the 52nd minute before Kieran Trippier restored Tottenham's lead with a well executed freekick, continuing his fine form at the World Cup.
West Ham United lost at home to Bournemouth after losing a 1-0 advantage with the game finishing 1-2. Marko Arnautovic 33rd minute penalty goal was not enough as Bournemouth fought back with Callum Wilson's equaliser and Steve Cook winning goal securing 3 point for ?Eddie Howe's Cherries.
Saturday's late kickoff encounter between London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal at Stamford Bridge produced a thrilling encounter which saw the Blues triumph 3-2 with defender Marcos Alonso once again scoring the winning goal.
Chelsea started brightly as a lacklustre Arsenal defence gifted them a 2-0 lead which was quickly surrendered before half-time as they could not maintain the intensity with which they started the game. Arsenal however missed three absolute sitters with Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan and Iwobi the culprits.
After a poor defensive showing in the first half by both teams, the second half was a more settled display with Chelsea retaining greater possession of the ball in the new Sarri style of play. Eden Hazard's introduction with half an hour to go increased the pressure on Arsenal's defence with finally cracked as the Belgian attacker (wanted by Real Madrid) laid a low cross into the box for Marcos Alonso to slot between Petr Cech's leg for to give Chelsea and Maurizio Sarri maximum points from two games so far.
Champions Manchester City, despite losing creative midfielder Kevin De Bruyne for about 3 months to a knee injury, showed their quality and squad depth with a 6-1 victory over Huddersfield on Sunday at the Etihad.
Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick (13th for the club) while Gabriel Jesus, David Silva and Terrence Kongolo's own goal ensured Guardiola's team should they are poised to retain the premier league crown for a second season running. Jon Stankovic scored Huddersfield Town's only goal.
Just hours after City's emphatic victory, across city neighbours Manchester United fell to a 3-2 loss at Brighton & Hove Albion, a loss set to send alarm bells ringing in the heart of United fan base following a summer of complaints from Jose Mourinho over the need to reinforce the teams failing defence.
Mourinho's point were fully highlighted in the game with centre pair Victor Lindelof and Eric Baily putting in a dismal shift at the heart of United's defence. The final scoreline was much more respectful than the on field display by United with even Pogba ripping into the teams attitude.
Later on Monday, Liverpool travels to Selhurst Park for a Monday night football action which rounds up the second round of matched in the premier league.
With the result table gradually taking shape and summer transfer window yet to close in major leagues across Europe, next weekend might prove to be even more exciting.
