I was placed under house arrest, treated like a criminal - Simon Achuba

The impeached deputy governor of Kogi state, Elder Simon Achuba, on Sunday, October 20, has described his impeachment as an act of lawlessness. Achuba who spoke to journalists in Lokoja, the state capital, said Kogi was fast degenerating into what he called a 'Banana Republic.'
According to Achuba, He said he was treated like a common criminal moments after the State House of Assembly made its pronouncement on Friday, October 19. According to him, security details attached to him as the state's number two citizen were withdrawn and others thereafter barricaded his official residence, placing him under “house arrest.” He revealed that the power supply to his official residence was disconnected and when the technician tried reconnecting it, he was stopped by the newly deployed security agents. “As I address you, my personal belongings are still there in my official residence. I don’t have access to them,” he told journalists. He insisted he remains the deputy governor of Kogi, adding that any judge who presides over the swearing-in of another deputy governor in the state would be sanctioning illegality. He called on the federal government to stop the “lawlessness playing out in Kogi,” saying what is not playing out is not good for democracy and rule of law. He, however, expressed optimism of getting justice in the court soon. Achuba had been having a running battle with his former boss, Alhaji Yahaya Bello. Both have been at loggerheads since the governor indicated his desire to seek a second term. Already, Achuba was not picked as the governor's running mate in the forthcoming governorship election in the state. Before the action of the state lawmakers, he had raised an alarm saying there are plans to force him out of the Kogi state government house.
