Omoyele Sowore: Lawyers call for nationwide boycott of courts
Some lawyers in the country have called on the national leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to declare a boycott of courts in the country over the alleged refusal of the Department of State Services (DSS) to adhere to a court order demanding the release of detained journalist, Omoyele Sowore.
The lawyers under the aegis of Nigerian Bar Association, Lekki-Eti-Osa forum at a press conference on Tuesday, November 12, questioned if the DSS was claiming superiority over the order made by a court of competent jurisdiction. The group accused the current administration of vandalising the country’s democracy by failing to obey court orders. It called on the national leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to hold a meeting to discuss and agree on series of actions to save democracy, including but not limited to the boycott of courts in the country. The lawyers vowed to take every action within the law to defend democracy and rule of law in the country. “We of the Lekki-Eti-Osa Forum of the Nigerian Bar Association will undertake all actions, within the ambit of the law to defend democracy and rule of law,” the statement said. "We will work with our civil society allies to undertake street protests and other actions that shall be agreed upon at the upcoming National Executive Committee Meeting of the Nigerian Bar Association. We will keep our friends in the media aware of our next steps as from time to time. Meanwhile it was reported by Obiaksnews yesterday that supporters of Sowore who stormed the DSS headquarters in Abuja to protest and demand the release of Sowore were dispersed by DSS officials who shot into the air to scare the peaceful protesters away.
