Edo lawyers boycott court over judge’s abduction
Following the kidnap of Justice Chioma Iheme-Nwosu of Edo, lawyers in the state on Wednesday, November 6, embarked on a three-day move of boycotting court sessions. This has led to many court rooms being under lock and key including the Evboriaria magistrate court situated in Benin, the state capital, Channels TV reports.
Speaking on the decision of the lawyers, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)'s chairman in Benin, Collins Ogiebgean, said that the boycott will continue for as long as Nwosu remains in captivity. Ogiebgean said: “If judges can be kidnapped and taken away in daylight, what about us? It is for this reason that we have resolved as a mark of protest to embark on this boycott." Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Court of Appeal, Benin Division was abducted by men who were suspected to be kidnappers. The worrisome incident which occurred along Benin-Agbor highway also claimed the life of a police officer. Another report noted that the criminals trailed the judge from Ramat Park end of the Benin-Agbor road and intercepted the vehicle with gunfire around Christ Chosen Church of God International. The police said that the vehicle driver was also injured by the criminals, adding that they had vowed to rescue the judge alive.
