Femi Falana, a senior lawyer and the counsel to the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has said that he has been declared persona non grata ( not allowed to visit his client in detention) by the DSS.
At the assumption of the trial, Falana told the court that he was served a motion on notice by the prosecutor, just a while ago. He said although the trial is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, November 6, that the defence team burdened by the failure of the prosecution to allow total representation of the defendants. Falana further prayed the court for an adjournment to enable the defence team take full instructions from defendants in full preparation for the expected trial period. "Normally they even allow us only five minutes but now in fact, I've been declared persona non grata by the DSS," Falana said. However, denying the allegation, prosecution lawyer, Hassan Liman, said that at no time have the defence counsel being denied access to the clients. He said even at the last court sitting, the defence team agreed that the defendants be kept in custody of the DSS pending when their bail conditions are fully met. Liman urged the court to allow the trial to proceed as witnesses for the matter are present in court. "So that the defendants will know their fate, they are presumed innocent until proved by the court of law," Liman said.
