The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Services (NCS), Colonel Hameed Ali (rtd) has said that Nigerians have been eating expired foreign rice.
Colonel Ali made the statement on Wednesday, October 30 at the Customs Service, Area 2 Onne in Rivers state. He said those who brought such rice into the country re-bag it and sell to unsuspecting consumers but promised that the NCS will overcome the challenges. His words: “We are consuming expired rice. When it causes cancer we begin to find who to blame. “We must reach out to Nigerians through the press to make them know the deadly effect of what they consume. He assured Nigerians that the Customs will do everything possible to protect the well being and safety of all Nigerians. Meanwhile, the federal government has rejected a plea by Vietnam that its rice should be allowed into Nigeria after the Nigerian border was closed about two months ago. It was earlier reported in the week that the customs intercepted a consignment of rotten frozen food including fish and other commodities in 5 containers at the Lagos sea port, it was alleged that the products went bad due to faulty refrigerators in the containers.
