Customs give Nigerians opportunity to pay customs duty on smuggled vehicles
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has given an opportunity to vehicle importers, owners and organised vehicle dealers to pay customs duty on smuggled, undervalued vehicles in the country.
According to reports, The area controller, Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, Comptroller Muhammed Aliyu, told the journalists on Wednesday, October 23, that customs opened the platform to allow Nigerians who own smuggled or undervalued vehicles to regularise their customs duty “For the category of vehicles that were detained, we have a platform now where the owners have the opportunity to pay their customs duty. At the same time, we have given a window for someone who has his or her personal car and hasn’t paid duty to come forward as the federal government has given an opportunity to pay the duty,” he said. Aliyu, however, stated that the owner of such a vehicle has to come forward with the vehicle to make the customs duty payment. He said the owners of vehicles without customs duty since in 2015 or 2016 can come and make necessary duty payment. He also explained that owners of undervalued vehicles were also welcomed to make use of the window before it closes. Aliyu warned that after the expiration of the window period anyone arrested without customs duty on any vehicles will not be spared. Few weeks back, there was a report on how some custom officials laid siege at an hotel in Abuja where some vehicles were impounded over lack of custom duties clearance papers by their owners.
