One of Nigeria’s political parties Hope Democratic Party (HDP) has filed a motion seeking an order of the presidential election tribunal restraining President Muhammadu Buhari from presenting himself to be sworn in on 29 May, 2019. The party is also seeking a order restraining the Chief Justice of Nigeria from swearing in, administering the oath of office and oath of allegiance to the president on the day.
        The party, which filed the motion on 9 May, 2019, said it was on six grounds pursuant to section one subsection two of the 1999 constitution (as amended) and under the jurisdiction of the tribunal. According to the party, it filed the motion because there is a pending petition challenging the election and return of President Buhari as the winner of the February 23 presidential election. The Hope Democratic Party also said the petition has been served on President Buhari and pleadings have been exchanged. Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has since rejected the 2019 presidential election results announced by the Independent Nationach Electoral Commission (INEC). The former vice president claimed that the results were manipulated to favour Buhari. Meanwhile the presidntial election tribunal which was inaugurated last week wednesday and chaired by President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa promised all the paties involved in the petition to be rest assured that the tribunal would carry out its functions and also pass judgement without fear or favour.
