Another UTME candidate has been arrested by JAMb for upgrading his score from 162 to 206 with the help of a fraudster. The candidate identified as Cletus Kokowa was arrested at the JAMB headquarters in Abuja when he went to lodge complaints about his score on Thursday, July 4.
            The candidate identified as Cletus Kokowa has been arrested by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for upgrading his score from 162 to 206 with the help of a fraudster. This is coming after one Adah Eche was apprehended by the board in June for similar offence, Kokowa was said to have confessed to JAMB on Thursday, July 4, that he was asked to pay N10,000 for the upgrading. Kokowa, who is from Bayelsa state, reportedly contacted a syndicate through a WhatsApp group where he was told that his score could be upgraded from 162 to 206. He was later sent a fake result screenshot to which stated that his score was now 206. The result, however, remained unchanged on the JAMB site, which prompted Kokowa's father, Garen Kokowa, to write a letter of complaint to the board asking for the rectification of his son’s scores. Kokowa's father wrote: “Your inability for swift response to address the issue has led to my son’s forfeiture of his Nigerian Defence Academy admission opportunity. However, I am craving for your indulgence to quickly rectify the result in affirmative to enable him have a good stand for his second choice of institution. Kokowa was thereafter invited by the board to come with the two results as proof, after which he confessed on Thursday, July 4, to have employed a syndicate. He was accompanied to the JAMB headquarters by an army officer who declined to give his name. The suspect was afterwards handed over to officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Kokowa said: “Those guys sent a mail to me that they could help me to upgrade my score. I then sent them my Registration number and e-mail. When the results were out and I checked, they showed me 206. Then, one of them called me asking me to pay them the money. I later went to check and I found 162. I was confused. I had heard that upgrading scores was an offence but I didn’t really believe it. I did not tell my daddy and my uncle about the syndicate.” According to JAMB registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, said the board would ensure that candidates discovered to have been involved in fraudulent practices before, during and after the examination would be arrested and prosecuted.
