UTME 2019: We arrested over 50 hired writers, some were postgraduates - JAMB
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Monday, April 15, said that 50 professional examination writers have been apprehended, JAMB said the examination impostors carried out their criminal acts in collaboration with owners of CBT centres - The examination board also said that the criminal writers were Masters' degree holder. postgraduates and undergraduates of various universities in the country.
The examination board said the 50 examination writers were arrested across the country on due to the intelligence gathering strategy it deployed. Fabain Benjamin, JAMB spokesman made this known in the body’s weekly bulletin. The JAMB spokesman said some of the arrested mercenaries and impostors were Masters’ degree holders, postgraduates and undergraduates of various institutions in the country. He said that the writers collaborated with owners of the Computer Based Test Centres (CBTs) to carry out the crime where multiple registrations were made. The spokesman said the multiple registrations allowed the criminal writers to be able to add the candidates’ fingerprints with theirs. A part of the bulletin reads: “The board has uncovered a group of professional examination writers who take the exams for prospective candidates for a fee. “As a result of intelligence gathering, over 50 of such writers have been arrested across the country. “Some of the fraudsters are Masters’ Degree holders, postgraduate and undergraduate students of tertiary institutions.
The modus operandi of these UTME syndicates was confirmed when one of the kingpins was apprehended recently. Fabian said the arrested culprits confessed to have done multiple biometric registrations with the intention of sitting for the candidates exams upon the payment of huge amount of money. The bulletin read further: "This Development is the fundamental reason for the decision of the board to revalidate all biometrics of candidates that have taken the board’s examination in recent times. “This timely action would enable the board to not only fish out and dismantle these registration cartels and racketeers but also bring them to book along with their collaborators.” Fabian also added that 1, 236, 316 candidates out of the 1.8 million registered have so far written the examination. “A total of 1,886,238 UTME candidates are expected to sit nationwide. And, 1,236,316 candidates have so far taken their examination, the bulletin added.
