Obaseki issues order stopping Oshiomhole, others from political rallies in Benin
Obaseki, through the secretary to the state government, Barr Osarodion Ogie, said it is a total ban on rallies and demonstrations in the state.
The governor asked security agencies in the state to go after anyone who breaches the order, no matter how important such a person is in the society. The statement released on Friday, December 13, insisted that the current tension in the state is the result of the move by some people to carry out an illegal political rally in Benin, the capital of the state. The government insisted further that the planned rally has the capacity to cause a breakdown of peace in the state thus endangering the lives of the residents. The government warned that any property owner who avails any such political groups the use of a venue would have such revoked and taken over by the state. “The events of yesterday 12th December, 2019 were a scary prelude to the absolute mayhem which these irresponsible activities would generate if left unchecked," the statement said adding that the government was aware of the desperate search for an alternative venue for the rally.
