June 12 Democracy Day: APC senators block motion on Buhari’s speech
Senators of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have prevented a motion by Senator Istifanus Dung Gyang (PDP, Plateau) on President Muhammadu Buhari's June 12 Democracy Day speech. The motion sought for the Senate to debate the speech delivered by Buhari.
Senator Istifanus on Thursday, June 13, brought the motion on the floor of the Senate, seeking the consent of his colleagues for the motion to be considered as a matter of urgent national importance. He said: “The motion has to do with the speech by President Muhammadu Buhari on Democracy Day. The speech is already in the public domain and had generated a lot of interest.” When Senate President Ahmad Lawan subjected the motion to voice votes, majority of the senators, most of whom are of the APC overwhelmingly rejected it. Lawan therefore ruled that “The nays have it.
In the address, President Buhari noted the strength in the unity of the country. He also noted that there was a general agreement that the 2019 presidential election was free and fair."The principal thrust of this new administration is to consolidate on the achievements of the last four years, correct the lapses inevitable in all human endeavors and tackle the new challenges the country is faced with and chart a bold plan for transforming Nigeria.
