Two men in court for allegedly stealing N2.65m valuables, cash
Two men on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrate Court for allegedly breaking into a house and stealing valuables worth N2.654 million.
Opeyemi Fakayode, 28; and Jamiyu Lateef, 23; residents of Awoyaya, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos, are standing trial on a four-count charge of break in, conspiracy, damage and stealing. The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Prosecutor, Insp. Chekwube Okeh told the court that the defendants, with some persons at large, committed the offences on Dec. 13, 2018, at No. 62, Adebambo, Ilori Oreyo, Igbogbo, Ikorodu, Lagos. She said the defendants illegally and unlawfully entered the house of one Mr Victor Ogunsola and stole his property. They gained access through the roof and willfully damaged it. The defendants stole a phone valued at N54,000; Gold Jewelry valued at N2 million, and cash of N600,000, totalling N2.654 million. The defendants were arrested by neighbours when they wanted to escape after the theft,” Okeh said.
According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 287, 339, 411 and 308 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Stealing is punishable with three years jail term, while conspiracy and housebreaking attract two years imprisonment each. The Magistrate, Mrs O. A. Akinde, granted the defendants a bail of N1 million with one surety each in like sum.
