Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that the country's Attorney General Githu Muigai has resigned from his post, without any explanation, adding that a replacement had already been nominated.
Kenyatta, in a twitter post, said he had accepted Muigai's resignation. He also said he had nominated the president of the court of appeal, Paul Kihara Kariuki, as Muigai's replacement. Kenya's parliament will vet Kihara before he takes over as Attorney General.
Githu Muigai, was appointed as the Attorney General in 2011, as part of reforms geared toward boosting confidence and trust in the country's judicial system after a new constitution was passed in 2010.
The Kenyan governments allegiance to the law has been under scrutiny after the government defied court orders in cases of government crackdown on opposition figures who participated in a parallel swearing in ceremony for opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Muigai had last December declared as treasonous, any attempt by Odinga to swear himself as president.
Last September, the country's Supreme Court nullified Kenyatta initial election on August 8 and ordered for a re-run election, which Odinga boycotted, handing victory over to Kenyatta, who was sworn in for a second term.
