South Africa's ruling party, African National Congress (ANC) has officially as embattled president Jacob Zuma to resign from office. 

The ANC's secretary general, Ace Magashule, told reporters that the National Executive Committee of the party decided tha Zuma's removal must be done urgently for the country's sake.

"The NEC has noted South Africa is going through a period of uncertainty and anxiety as a result of unresolved matter of transition." He added, "When we recall our deployee, we expect our deployee to do as asked."

Mr. Zuma, who has been in power since 2009, is expected to announce his official response to the request by the party, though no deadline was given to him.

Mr. Magashule said the election of Ramaphosa brought a fresh hope which the country needed to build upon. He noted, "It is obvious we want Comrade Ramaphosa to come in as the president of South Africa." 

Opposition parties are expressing doubts about Zuma sticking to the party line. The Democratic Alliance (DA) tweeted, "The only way to remove Jacob Zuma as president of our country is for parliament to do so through a motion of no confidence."

It remarked the only way to ensure Zuma's removal is to bring him before parliament, as moved in the motion by another opposition party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), asking that the date should be brought forward from February 22.
