Former Israeli Prime Minister and President Shimon Peres has died at the age of 93.
According to an announcement from the Sheba Medical Centre in Tel Aviv, Peres died at 3.40 am on Wednesday morning.
The statesman suffered a stroke two weeks ago that left him with significant brain trauma, according to his doctors.
Peres, the Israeli Nobel laureate, had been in declining health in recent weeks.
He suffered a stroke earlier this month which left him unconscious and relying on a breathing tube.
Doctors had hoped that he would be able to recover, but his condition continued to deteriorate over the weekend.
Hospital officials told family members that there was nothing they could do for him.
Peres' passing marks the end of an era in Israel's history, as the last of the country's founding generation leaves the stage.
