Another attempted jail break ended very tragically on Thursday, with the death of several inmates, while many others sustained bullet injuries.
The incident occurred at the Abakaliki prisons in Ebonyi State.
Trouble reportedly began on Thursday morning, when prisoners at the facility revolted against the poor treatment, especially inadequate feeding that has been persistent in the prison for a long time.
The prisoners reportedly began using every instrument they could lay their hands on, to fight prison officials; and in the process, injured many.
In retaliation, the prison officials allegedly returned fire for fire, resulting in the killing of several inmates. Many others sustained gunshot wounds.
According to unconfirmed sources, more than 14 persons- including a prison official- were killed in the fracas; while the injured were evacuated for treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, FETHA.
But for the rapid response of the combined team of the prison officials, Nigeria police and army drafted to the scene, the inmates had started escaping from the prison, having over-powered the guards.
Gunshots were heard intermittently as Police and soldiers tried to recover firearms allegedly taken from one of the prison officials by the inmates.
The rioting inmates had already succeeded in creating an opening on the wall before anti-riot policemen arrived and tear-gassed them into submission.
