Man Killed Nephew, Attempted Suicide

Kabir Tukur, 35, has been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command for allegedly killing his nephew. The State's Police Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Haruna confirmed that the suspect lured his nephew into the bush and slaughtered him. The incident happened on the morning of Tuesday, October 13, in Kirfi Local Government, Bauchi State. The deceased, 11-year-old Auwalu Manu, was the son of the suspect's younger brother. According to Haruna, the suspect attempted suicide by slicing his own throat. However, Tukur only lost his consciousness in the process and was rushed to the hospital.

"The victim and suspect were rushed to ATBU Teaching Hospital Bauchi and the victim was certified death by a medical doctor while the suspect was admitted for medical attention,” he added. Haruna said the police visited the scene of the crime and recovered a blood stained hand trowel as an exhibit. He also said the corpse was photographed and released to relatives for burial according to Islamic rites after autopsy. The case was put under investigation. The motive behind the murder remains unclear.

Meanwhile, residents of Oleh community in Isoko south local government area of Delta State have fled their homes following alleged witchcraft killings in the community, which members of the community claimed had resulted to the deaths of many in the community.

It was reliably gathered that a prophetess identified as sister Rosemary (surname withheld) in one of the new churches established in the community, has been accused of being responsible for the death of many youths in the community including some members of her church with her alleged witchcraft powers. They claimed the accused prophecy using diabolical power and she had used this power in luring several individuals in the community to their early graves.

Sources said that the church (name withheld) was initially situated along Okpesia quarters around Police Station road, thereafter it was relocated to Olomoro community in the same locality until the demise of the accused prophetess. It was also revealed that those who seek miracles and prayers from the prophetess were allegedly subjected to filling forms which were often times sold for N3,000 and despite the tough conditions, the ministry had kept increasing in population before the bubble bursted.

Investigation revealed that mysterious deaths of some of the church members particularly that of a pregnant woman (name withheld) who allegedly died during child birth two months ago as a result of severe bleeding had thrown the entire congregation and residents of the community into fear of the unknown. It was further gathered that the prophetess was struck with a terrible illness that defied all medical treatment and at the point of almost given up the ghost, she confessed to having been using witchcraft powers in committing many atrocities after which she died.

A church member who simply identified himself as Edwin said, “The ministry has gone into extinction and so many people were killed with the use of witchcraft powers and the fear of the unknown still hangs in the community.”
