Edo Declares 5-day Public Holiday To Mourn Oba

Edo State Government has declared a 5-day public holiday to mourn the revered Royal Father, Omo N' Oba N' Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa, who recently passed away.

The public holiday which takes effect from Tuesday, May 3 2016 is a mark of honour and respect for the late Oba of Benin.

In a government special announcement signed by the Hon Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Kassim Afegbua, it reads that only essential services in hospitals, health centres, the fire service and others are exempted from observing the public holiday.

The statement also added that the Nigerian National Flag is expected to be flown at half mast across the state during the mourning period while work is expected to resume on Monday, May 9 2016.

The statement reads in part, "On behalf of myself and family, I express my heartfelt condolences to the entire royal family of the distinguished monarch, patriot and statesman, His Royal Majesty Omo N'Oba N'Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa of Benin Kingdom and also commiserate with the people of Benin over the transition of our great monarch to the world beyond.
