Collapsed Refuse Dump Kills 17 in Mozambique

No fewer than 17 people have been killed and many injured following the collapse of a 15 metre high pile of refuse collapse in Mozambique's capital on Monday. Officials says seven houses were buried as a result of the collapse. The collapse was due to heavy rain.
The incident occurred in the Hulene neighborhood, about 10 kilometres from the centre of Maputo at around 3 a.m. in the local time. The houses buried under the collapsed refuse were illegal structures which authorities had asked occupants to leave.
"Up to now 17 dead bodies were recovered. We fear more might be unaccounted for. So we will keep searching for bodies buried underneath the garbage pile," a Councillor for Ka Mavota Municipal District, Despedida Rita, told reporters.
In many African cities, the growing demand for land has led some people to reside on land they do not own. Unsafe structures are often built to cope with the demand.
