Alberta's Major Cities Choked by Wildfire Smoke, Health Warnings Issued

Environment Canada advises residents to reduce outdoor activities and take precautions as poor air quality affects Edmonton and Calgary due to wildfires.

Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta's prominent cities, find themselves engulfed in smoke pollution caused by raging wildfires in the central and northern regions of the province. Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement, drawing attention to the deteriorating air quality and reduced visibility resulting from the pervasive wildfire smoke. Authorities urge residents to limit their time spent outdoors, particularly those with pre-existing health conditions, and take necessary measures to safeguard their well-being.

The impact of the wildfires has prompted Environment Canada to provide essential guidelines for residents. Keeping windows closed to prevent the infiltration of smoke and circulating indoor air are advised to maintain cleaner air quality inside homes. Furthermore, it is recommended to regularly replace air filters for optimal filtration.

Yellowhead and Brazeau counties remain hotspots of major wildfire activity, with prevailing winds pushing the smoke southward, affecting the air quality in Edmonton and Calgary. According to the latest reports from Sunday morning, Calgary recorded an air quality index rating of nine out of ten, while Edmonton's rating stood at seven.

While Calgary's air quality index is expected to improve as the night progresses and continue to get better on Monday, Edmonton's air quality is anticipated to remain stable, indicating that the effects of the wildfires will persist for the foreseeable future, necessitating ongoing vigilance and precautions.

Despite the challenging conditions, the Edmonton Elks are determined to proceed with their highly anticipated home opener scheduled for Sunday evening. The organization has decided to uphold the 5 p.m. kickoff, despite the compromised air quality. Similarly, in Calgary, both Cavalry FC and the Foothills Women's Club are planning to move forward with their games. However, considering the circumstances, the Stampeder's practice for the day has been canceled, prioritizing the health and safety of the players and staff.

The decision to proceed with these events has been made after careful consideration, recognizing the importance of maintaining a sense of normalcy while also prioritizing public safety amidst the challenging conditions imposed by the wildfires. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates and guidelines to ensure the well-being of residents and participants in various events across the affected cities.
