APC sponsoring Modu Sheriff to scuttle PDP Makarfi group

The Ahmed Makarfi led People's Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Presidency of sponsoring the party's former National Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, to destabilise the party.

Addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja on behalf of Makarfi, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, a member of the Caretaker Committee in charge of publicity, said that the PDP has privileged information of how APC from the North West met with Sheriff on Sunday night.

Makarfi said: "Sheriff is being used by the enemies of the PDP. The APC has contracted Sheriff to scuttle the party. Sheriff is acting the script of a mighty hand. The hand of the power that be, is in this matter. He is aided and abetted by the APC to destabilise the PDP.

"What we are however very certain about is that Sheriff and his fellow renegades are being used by the enemies of the PDP to prevent it from reorganising itself, so as not to provide a credible opposition and alternative platform for the forthcoming Edo State gubernatorial election and the 2019 general elections.

"The APC has contracted Sheriff and his cohorts to scuttle the chances of the PDP in the Edo governorship elections. We have credible intelligence that Sheriff had a meeting on Sunday night with an APC governor from the North West, where it was agreed that he would be given full security and financial support to exacerbate the crisis in the PDP with the objective of preventing the party from presenting a candidate for the Edo governorship elections, or in the very least to prevent the PDP from offering a serious challenge to APC whose electoral fortunes has continued to nosedive," he said.

On Sheriff's invasion of the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, Adeyeye blamed the police for allowing him to enter the building.

He said: "Up to a point, the police discharged their responsibilities satisfactorily. However, later on, without any justification whatsoever, Ali Modu Sheriff and the other renegades were allowed to gain entry into the Secretariat, where they addressed a press conference.

"While we are still trying to understand the role of the police in the entire saga, it is curious that the police made no arrest of the thugs who openly brandished various dangerous weapons in and around the premises of the secretariat in the full glare of the police. It is also curious that the police claimed to be acting on orders from above' in allowing Sheriff and his cohorts to gain entry into the secretariat. If we may ask, who is the authority that issued the Orders from above'?"

Adeyeye pointed out that Sheriff gave the impression that he has court orders that empower him to continue as PDP national chairman, adding that, "The truth of the matter is that Senator Sheriff has no court order to back his claims. He and his cohorts continue to shop around to buy any court order at any price, but so far they have not succeeded, thanks to the vigilance and integrity of the judiciary."

Reacting to Makarfi claims, Sheriff, through his media aide, Inuwa Bwala, said that Makarfi is a stooge of a cabal in the PDP.

He said: "This is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. It is common knowledge that Makarfi is a stooge of a cabal and impostor of PDP, given the fact that the caretaker committee is not known in PDP Constitution.

"Sheriff is too big to be used by anybody. Makarfi should stop telling lies to justify his illegitimacy," he said.

In his reaction, the APC National Secretary, Mai Mala Bunu, described the allegation as an open lie that must be disregarded.
He insisted that what the PDP is currently facing is a clear case of nemesis at work.
