Embattled former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ali Modu Sheriff, led his supporters to storm the party's National Secretariat at Wadata Plaza, Abuja, early Monday morning. But he was prevented by security officials from gaining entrance into the premises.
Sheriff, who was Chairman before the party's national convention held in Port Harcourt on May 21, intended to regain control over the affairs of the PDP.
Two different factions of the PDP had previously held conventions on May 21. Sheriff was supposed to head the convention in Port Harcourt, but later announced its cancellation, citing court orders.
Other leaders of the party however ignored him and went ahead with the convention and also announced his sack as the party's Chairman, and the appointment of a caretaker committee headed by former Kaduna State governor, Ahmed Makarfi.
The Jerry Gana faction meanwhile held its own convention in Abuja, and announced Senator Ibrahim Mantu as the new chairman of the PDP.
With 3 separate factions now claiming leadership, the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, ordered a sealing of the secretariat in order to avoid clashes.
However, some leaders of the party had last week announced that a reconciliation meeting had resolved all the issues, paving the way for the resumption of Mr. Makarfi and his committee at the secretariat.
Mr. Sheriff who was out of the country at the time, however released a statement via his aide, stating that their decision was null and void.
