An ally of Russia's president Vladimir Putin has lost his bid for Interpol top position, following the announcement of South Korea's Kim Jong-yang as the organisation's new president, taking over and completing the four year term of his predecessor, Meng Hongwei, who was detained by the Chinese government on bribery charges in September.

Alexander Prokopchuk, a Russian Interior Ministry general and Interpol's vice president,  was opposed by the US, Britain and it's European allies over accusations he abused the organisation's "Red Notice System" to target political opponents and critics of Moscow while he was Interpol's Moscow bureau chief.

"Red Notice is an international alert/request circulated by Interpol to
seek the location/arrest of an individual wanted by a judicial jurisdiction
or an international tribunal with a view to his/her extradition"

Mr Kim was chosen by at least two-thirds of votes cast by Interpol's 194 member states at its annual general assembly in Dubai on Wednesday.
