French market gunman shot dead by security forces in Neudorf, Strasbourg

The Strasbourg shooter who killed three people at a popular Christmas market in France has been killed by French police on Thursday after more than 30 hours of a massive manhunt by French security forces involving 700 personnel.

The propaganda wing of the Islamic State jihadist group claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attack, calling the 29-year-old Cherif Chekatt as one of its "soldiers" which makes the attack the latest in a string of jihadist attacks to rock France.

France's Interior Minister said Chekatt shot dead after he opened fire on three police officers who spotted him on the street in the Neudorf area of Strasbourg at 21:00 local time (20:00 GMT) and tried questioning him.

"They immediately returned fire and neutralised the assailant," Castaner said.

Chekatt -whose has been on  watch-list of suspected terrorist- lived in a rundown apartment block a short drive from the city centre.

Five people -including his parents and two of his brothers- have been arrested in connection with the attack.

Mayor of the northeastern French city, Roland Ries said that finding the shooter eases the mind of the worried people of his city.

"It's really a huge relief," said Alain Fontanel, a local official in the mayor's office, describing the anxiety that locals had felt since Tuesday's attack.

"We didn't really feel very safe," one 18-year-old local named Arthur told AFP.
