12-day-old baby snatched and killed by monkey in India

An infant baby has been killed by a monkey after being bitten in the Indian city of Agra, which home to one of India most famous attractions -the Taj Mahal.

The 12-day-old baby was grabbed from his mothers arm while she breastfed him, the family says. He was recovered from the roof of a neighbour where he had been dropped by the monkey, as local resident gave pursuit.

He died in hospital as a result of his injuries.

The mother of the child is said to be distraught by the ordeal, according to the child's uncle, Dhirendra Kumar, who said the family was heartbroken by the ordeal.

"There are too many monkeys in the area. We live in fear. We have told the administration so many times to help us but they haven't done anything. The mother of the baby is too distraught to even speak," he said.

Pushpa Devi, the child's grandmother said: "I have lost my grandson. Just a few hours before the monkey attacked our baby, I had him in my arms. Our baby didn't have to die. People will talk about it for a while and then forget it. But we have to live with the reality that our baby is gone".

The city has witnessed an increase in monkey-related attacks in recent months.

In May, two tourists were attacked at the Taj Mahal, while a toddler is recovering in hospital after being attacked two months earlier.

Local environmental activist, Shravan Kumar Singh, says monkeys in the area were becoming more aggressive after being displaced from their natural habitats.

He said, "Monkeys are everywhere in Agra. They come in search of food, but they snatch and attack as well."

He added that there have been calls for the monkeys to be sterilised and excluded from wildlife protection legislation.
