Black students pushed off stage for "celebratory dancing" at graduation ceremony

A university has been forced to apologise after faculty members ‘inappropriately' shoved black students off stage for celebrating their graduation.

A video from a ceremony at the University of Florida, filmed on Saturday, shows a lecturer forcibly pushing several graduates away as they dance on stage after receiving their diplomas.

Several clips have been circulated online with many accusing the US university of only being physical with black and other minority students.

One of the dancing students, Oliver Telusma, told ABC News' Good Morning America that the incident was 'embarrassing'.

Another student Nafeesah Attah told the publication that the dances were symbolic gestures of joy.

She added: ‘It was definitely contingent on your race… other white students who were dancing were not perceived as a threat.'

One wrote on Twitter: ‘Somebody please find out this employee's name!! Every time a black student took more than TWO seconds, he aggressively pushed them.'

University of Florida president Kent Fuch wrote an apology on Twitter on Sunday morning.
