The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres has called on the leader of the Myanmar government Aung San Suu Kyi, to bring an end to the ongoing violence against Rohingya muslims in the country.

Guterres further warned that continued violence in the country could lead to "regional destabilisation".

In response, the Myanmar government has reiterated its commitment to defending all its citizens.

In a statement issued by her office on Facebook, Aung San Suu Kyi said the government had "already started defending all the people in Rakhine in the best way possible" and warned against misinformation that could mar relations with other countries.
