Carbon monoxide kills mother, child after snow blocks car tailpipe

A mother and her 1-year-old child died Saturday night after the tailpipe of their car became covered with snow, poisoning them with carbon monoxide, police said.
Officers responded to a 2000 Mazda parked at a home on Sherman Avenue at around 8:10 p.m. Saturday, where they found three unresponsive people, Detective Andy White of the Passaic Police Department said.
The victims were transferred to St. Mary's Hospital, where the 23-year-old mother and 1-year-old boy were pronounced dead, said White.
The third occupant, a 3-year-old girl, was listed in critical condition. She was later transferred to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, where she remained in critical condition, said White.
An on-duty Passaic police officer fired his gun one time at the three suspects. No one was injured in the shooting, officials said.
An investigation revealed that the family was waiting inside the car while another family member was outside shoveling around the vehicle, but the tailpipe was covered with snow, flooding the inside with carbon monoxide.
Police said drivers should be aware of their exhaust pipes during large pileups of snow.
"On behalf of the entire City of Passaic, our thoughts and prayers are with the family," said White.
The deaths are the first reportedly related to a historic blizzard that dropped nearly three feet of snow on large swaths of the state.
