United were keen to turn tables during the second leg tie of the round of 32 fixture played at Old Trafford having settled for a 1-1 draw in the reverse tie played in Belgium. It is, for this reason, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paraded a strong side for the home clash, with Scott McTominay making a return to the midfield alongside Fred. The pair partnered Fernandes, Juan Mata and Dan James all who played in an advanced role behind Ighalo. The tactical set up paid off in the 23rd minute as James' attacking prowess saw Delli sent off after the Brugge player intentionally handled the ball in the box to stop the winger's dangerous shot. The referee had no choice but to award a penalty which Fernandes stepped to take to hand the hosts a deserved lead. The Red Devils went on to capitalise on their opponents' numerical disadvantage as Ighalo doubled the lead in the 33rd minute, opening his United goal account with an incisive tap in from Mata's assist. McTominay put the game beyond Brugge's reach four minutes to the break, placing the ball into the bottom corner with the side of his foot to make it 3-0. Fred continued the goal fest in the second half of the match, putting the icing on the cake with a fine finish off Jesse Lingard who unselfishly set him up. He completed his brace of the night at the death to make if 5-0 as United stormed the last 16 with an impressive 6-1 goal aggregate.
Odion Ighalo dedicated his first Manchester United goal to his sister, who died in December.
