Nigerian football star get huge punishment after slapping referee
Dubagari football club star Yakubu Hassan has been suspended indefinitely after assaulting a referee during a football match.
The news was confirmed by Nasarawa Football Association vice chairman Halidu Akwashiki as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday, November 6. He revealed that the player slapped one match official Kasimu Ahmadu, on October 29, during his side's encounter against Winda Force Football Club on October 29. Hassan was said to have been cautioned by the referee after an infringement was spotted during one of the state's FA 2019/20 competition. The chairman of the competition’s disciplinary committee Mr. Akwashiki told NAN that the incident was bizarre, adding that the panel had no choice but to suspend the player from further participating in the competition. He has also been instructed to write an apology letter to the match officials and his club to pay a fine to the FA. "The actions we took will serve as lessons to other players and clubs never to intimidate or instigate violence on match officials and to adhere strictly to the rules of the game,” he said. He added that: "It was embarrassing for everyone, and I mean everyone including the fans because we all assumed this action is unheard of in this generation but to our surprise, we have been reminded on the dangers match officials face just for doing their jobs; it is sad." The Nigerian football league scene once in a while experiences alterations between players and referees and it is expected by fans that the Nigerian football federating body should put more stringent laws in place to protect referees when carrying out their duties.
