Breaking: Ex-UEFA president Platini arrested after awarding 2022 World Cup to Qatar

Michel Platini has been arrested in connection with Qatar hosting the 2022 World Cup. The former UEFA president was alleged to have received bribe from the oil-rich nation.
Qatar will host the 2022 soccer fiesta during the winter period because of the intense heat. The 63-year-old was elected as UEFA president in 2007 until he was banned by the FIFA Ethics Committee for a series of breaches in 2015. According to Mediapart, Platini was taken into custody on Tuesday morning, June 18, as part of the investigation into the awarding of the World Cup to the oil-rich nation. It is understood that the French legend was taken to the premises of the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police (OCLCIFF). When Qatar was named as the hosts of the World Cup in 2022, there have been a number of controversies giving the hosting rights to the Middle East nation. Allegations of corruption and bribery within FIFA top-ranked officials have raised questions over the legitimacy of the bid from Qatar. Ten of the 22-man FIFA executive committee who voted on the host nations of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups have been banned or serving a ban for corruption breaches. The World Cup for the first time was later moved to the winter because of the intensity of the heat during the summer in the Gulf region.
