Griezmann: How Atletico Madrid manager, Diego Simeone reacted to France forward’s departure
Atletico Madrid president, Enrique Cerezo has reacted to manager Diego Simeone’s response to the news that France forward, Antoine Griezmann will be leaving his side in this summer’s transfer window.
Cerezo claimed that Simeone was ”disappointed” like other members of the club after hearing that his star player will leave Wanda Metropolitano at the end of the season. Simeone is disappointed, like the others,” Cerezo told COPE’s ‘El Partidazo’ radio show. Griezmann was determined to leave and there was no chance of convincing him. I don’t know or care [who Griezmann’s next team will be]. But when a team wants to pay a release clause, it’s normal to communicate and we haven’t received any messages from anyone just yet. Wherever he goes, I hope that he is treated the same as he was here… and good luck!
Griezmann, who has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, on Tuesday, confirmed that he is leaving Atletico Madrid at the end of the season. The player wrote on his official Twitter page: “After speaking with [coach Diego Simeone], [CEO Miguel] Angel Gil Marin and with people in the club’s hierarchy, I wanted to speak with you, the fans. You have always shown me a lot of love and I wanted to be the first to tell you that I’ve taken the decision to leave to see other things and take on other challenges. It’s been a difficult route to take, but it’s what I feel I need. Thanks for everything during five fantastic years here, where I was able to win my first big trophies. There have been some incredible moments that I will always remember. You, the supporters, will always be in my heart.
