Cameron Norrie recorded a French Open main-draw debut victory, as his opponent Peter Gojowczyk was forced to retire injured, with the in-form Briton in dominant form.
The British No 3 reached his maiden ATP semi-final in Lyon last week to break into the world's top 100 for the first time and extended his stay at Roland Garros after leading 6-1 2-0 when the German world No 43 decided to call a halt to proceedings.
Norrie, who has enjoyed a series of landmarks in his debut year in the professional ranks, will next meet France's world No 16 Lucas Pouille in the second round.
The 22-year-old recorded 14 winners, only two unforced errors and broke Gojowczyk twice to race through the opening set in 25 minutes.
Gojowczyk, at a career high in the world rankings himself after reaching the final in Geneva last week, called for the trainer at the end of the opening set but despite treatment was unable to trouble Norrie when at the start of the second.
Norrie secured a third break of the match and brought up to two further break points for a double-break lead when his opponent shook hands at the net.
