Real Madrid and Liverpool advances into the champions league quarterfinals

Defending champions Real Madrid eased into the Champions League quarterfinals with a 2-1 win at 10-man Paris Saint-Germain.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 12th goal in the competition and equalled a record of scoring in 9 straight champions league game joining former manchester united teammate, Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Casemiro's late strike ensured Zinedine Zidane's side progressed 5-2 on aggregate in the French capital on Tuesday evening.

Leading 3-1 from the first leg, Real never looked in danger against the sedate hosts despite Edinson Cavani's fortunate second-half equaliser, the which also saw Marco Verratti sent off for PSG as their hopes of a maiden Champions League title ended.

Missing their talismanic forward, Neymar Jr., PSG were too pedestrian and struggled to break down Real, who comfortably contained the surprisingly subdued hosts.

In the other game of the night, Liverpool joined Mdarid in advancing into the quarterfinals of the Champions League for the first time in nine years with no great alarm in a lifeless goalless draw at home to Porto. The game was a contrast to their amazing first leg display which gave them a 5-0 win at the Estadio do Dragao, but the goaless draw gave them a fifth clean sheet in eight European matches and no apparent injuries represented mission accomplished.

Manager Jurgen Klopp made five changes - two more than he had suggested prematch - with the most significant being a rest for 32-goal forward Mohamed Salah and a first start in two months for Adam Lallana. It was reflected in the first-half statistics which showed Liverpool failed to have a single shot on target in the opening 45 minutes for only the second time this season and the first time since the 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea in November.
