Barcelona FC star Lionel Messi, has been handed a 21month prison sentenced for tax fraud by a Barcelona Court on Wednesday.
A jail term of 21months was also handled to the footballer's father, Jorge, by the court, for defrauding Spain of €4.1m (£3.5m; $4.5m) between 2007 and 2009.
Both men were also ordered to pay fines- 2million euros for Lionel Messi and 1.5million euros for his father- for making use of tax heavens to conceal earnings from Spanish authorities.
The football star insisted during the trial that he knew nothing about how his finances were handled, stating that he was just "busy playing football," while his father handled his money.
