Nigeria's ruling party becomes minority in Senate as 15 senators defects to the opposition

Fifteen senator of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) have announced their defection to the opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP).

In a letter read by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, (who prevented from leaving his home by police earlier) the senators indicated their intention to leave the party.

The lawmakers who signed the letter include: Rabui Musa Kwankwaso (Kano Central), Barnabas Gemade (Benue North-West), Dino Melaye (Kogi East), Isa Hamman Misau , Lanre Tajouso, Shaaba Lafiagi, Mohammed Shittu and Ubali Shittu.

Others senators are: Rafui Ibrahim, Suleiman Hunkuyi, Monsurat Sunmonu, Ibrahim Danbaba, Usman Nafada, Suleiman Nazif and Murtala Nyako.

The defection now leaves the APC in a minority, presenting a number of challenges to President Buhari who might find it difficult to get legislation passed or could face a possible impeachment.
