An alarm has been raised by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, over an alleged plot to assassinate its candidate for the Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the legislative rerun election, Senator Magnus Abe.
In statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Chris Finebone, on Monday, the APC stated that a recent call by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the withdrawal of security details attached to Abe was a plot to expose him to assassination.
A call for the removal of Abe's security details had been made on Sunday by the Chairman of the PDP in Rivers State, Mr. Felix Obua.
Obua made the call via a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Jerry Needam, .
The statement said the PDP was shocked to note that despite the subsisting police order withdrawing and canceling attachment of officers of Counter-Terrorism Unit to private individuals and politicians, Abe still paraded hundreds of officers of CTU and soldiers as orderlies.
Obua said more worrisome was the insinuation and rumors being peddled that by the APC that the state was insecure, yet such number of specially trained security operatives, popularly called "Red Cap" that ought to be deployed for the greater surveillance and protection of lives and public property across Rivers, were attached to an individual.
However, in reaction to Obua's statement, the APC alleged that such a call by the PDP was in line with a plan to assassinate Abe ahead of the postponed rerun senatorial elections in the state.
The APC accused the opposition party of "selective amnesia," recalling that Governor Wike had in the past, also paraded himself with a huge number of security operatives.
The statement read in part, "The APC is compelled to ask a number of questions following this recent display of unbridled obsession with Senator Abe's personal security details.
"Have Felix Obuah and the PDP gone into selective amnesia so soon by not recalling that not long ago, Nyesom Wike, as Minister of State for Education, strutted around the state with more soldiers and Special Forces personnel than the then Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi?"
The statement continued, "Could the scrutiny of Senator Abe's personal protection security details and arrangements be part of a grand plot to assassinate him as being rumoured since he cannot be stopped as directed by the Governor?
"Assuming without conceding that Senator Abe has the security personnel the PDP stated, what is the real or imaginary reasons behind such a meticulous and painstaking study of an individual's personal security architecture by Felix Obuah and the PDP?"
The ruling party called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General, Department of State Services and other relevant security agencies and Nigerians in general to hold the Rivers State PDP responsible for any untoward security breach or harm against Magnus Abe.
