The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Anambra State yesterday issued its schedule and timetable for the March 5, 2016 rerun senatorial election in Anambra Central zone.
The information was made available in a signed statement by the Resident Electoral Commissioner,Dr Lawrence Azubike announced the disqualification of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election in Awka.
According to the statement, "only those parties that participated in the March 28, 2015 election, excluding the PDP and its candidate will participate in the rerun election."
It urged every registered voter to go to their various polling units name to cast their ballots within the provisions of applicable electoral laws in the country on the scheduled date.
This could be said to be the only formal statement of the commission regarding those who would participate in the re run.
Though reasons were not given on why the PDP was barred from taking part in the rerun, Azubuike, reiterated that only candidates who participated in the March 28, 2015 annulled senatorial election in the district would be competent to participate in the rerun election.
It would be recalled that the re-run election is coming on the heels of the Enugu Court of Appeal nullification of the said senatorial election on December 7, 2015, while the candidate Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, who vied for the March poll on the platform of the PDP, was also disqualified for improper nomination.
Ekwunife, has however, abandoned the party for All Progressives Congress, APC. The fate of the APC whose candidate, Dr. Chris Ngige will not take part in the re-run election based on his recent appointment as a Minister was not clarified by the REC.
